Top 5 Things to Do
When Visiting Australia

Australia's East Coast is one of the most incredible stretches of land on the planet - but most travellers only scratch the surface. These are the five experiences that genuinely change people. The ones they're still talking about ten years later.

I've spent years on the East Coast. I've watched thousands of travellers come through - some who nailed it, and some who got back on the plane wishing they'd done more. The difference almost always comes down to the same five things. Miss these and you've missed Australia. Do them properly and you'll be booking your return flight before you've even landed home.

1 Sail the Whitsundays

There's a reason the Whitsundays appear on every "best of Australia" list ever written. 74 tropical islands, the whitest silica sand on earth at Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet's swirling turquoise waters, and the Great Barrier Reef right on your doorstep. But the best way to experience all of it isn't from a resort - it's from the water.

Whether you do a high-speed day on the Thundercat, a 2-day sailing trip on New Horizon, or the 3-day Atlantic Clipper - waking up at anchor in a bay you have almost entirely to yourself is something that doesn't happen many places in the world. The Whitsundays is one of them. Don't rush this one.

2 Snorkel or Dive the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet, visible from space, and home to thousands of species of marine life. Most people know this. What most people don't know is how accessible it actually is - you don't need to be a diver or even a particularly strong swimmer to get in and experience it properly.

The Silverswift Intro Dive from Cairns takes you to three outer reef sites where the visibility is extraordinary and the coral is some of the most vibrant you'll find anywhere. Equipment is provided, guides are in the water with you, and no experience is required. If there's one thing on this list you can't leave without doing - this is it.

3 Watch the Sunrise from a Lookout

Hill Inlet lookout at Whitehaven Beach. Cape Tribulation. Byron Bay lighthouse. The East Coast is full of jaw-dropping vantage points - and the ones that hit differently are the ones you get to early. There's something about being one of the only people on a lookout as the sun comes up over the islands that resets something in you. It costs nothing and it's the kind of memory that doesn't fade.

Most Whitsundays day tours include the Hill Inlet lookout as part of the day. It's genuinely one of the most photographed views in Australia - and no photo fully does it justice. You need to see it yourself.

4 Jump Out of a Plane

I'll be honest - I was terrified the first time. Most people are. But a tandem skydive from 15,000 feet over the Whitsunday Islands is one of those experiences that completely redefines your sense of what's possible. The freefall lasts about 60 seconds. The views - of the reef, of the islands, of Airlie Beach below - are unlike anything you'll see from any other vantage point on earth.

People almost universally say it was the best thing they've ever done. Not just the best thing in Australia - the best thing ever. If you're on the fence, that's completely normal. Do it anyway. You can thank me later.

5 Actually Slow Down

This one sounds obvious but it's the one most travellers get wrong. Australia is big - genuinely enormous - and the temptation is to race through as many cities and stops as possible. Resist it. The East Coast rewards the people who linger. Spend an extra day in Airlie Beach. Take the morning beach walk before anyone else is awake. Sit on the deck of a sailing boat with a drink in your hand and nowhere to be.

The best stories people bring home from Australia aren't the ones from the busiest days. They're the ones from the quiet moments in between - when the pace slows down and the place actually gets into you. Build those moments into your trip. They're the ones you'll carry longest.
